Auto Sector Stuck in Low Growth

Production

The industry produced a total 21,820,072 vehicles including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three wheelers and two wheelers in April-February 2016 as against 21,460,837 in April-February 2015, registering a marginal growth of 1.67 percent over the same period last year.

Domestic Sales

The sales of Passenger Vehicles grew by 7.50 percent in April-February 2016 over the same period last year. Within the Passenger Vehicles, Passenger Cars, Utility Vehicles and Vans grew by 8.73 percent, 4.77 percent and 2.87 percent respectively during April-February 2016 over the same period last year.

The overall Commercial Vehicles segment registered a growth of 10.42 percent in April-February 2016 as compared to the same period last year. Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) registered a growth at 30.63 percent while Light Commercial Vehicles declined by (-) 1.45 percent during April-February 2016 over the same period last year.

Three Wheelers sales declined by (-) 0.50 percent in April-February 2016 over the same period last year. Passenger Carrier sales increased by 0.24 per cent & Goods Carrier sales declined by (-) 3.75 percent respectively in April-February 2016 over April-February 2015.

Two Wheelers sales registered a growth at 2.29 percent during April-February 2016 over April-February 2015. Within the Two Wheelers segment, Scooters grew by 11.61 percent while Motorcycles and Mopeds dropped by (-) 1.14 percent and (-) 4.11 percent respectively in April-February 2016 over April-February 2015.

Exports

In April-February 2016, overall automobile exports grew by 1.56 percent. Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, Three Wheelers and Two Wheelers registered a growth of 3.14 percent, 17.66 percent, 3.01 percent and 0.37 percent respectively in April-February 2016 over April-February 2015.
